Laboratory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
Writer & Editor : Andi Darmawan
Laboratory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is an absolute thing that needs to be implemented in every laboratory. Laboratory is one of the most important places because of their role in analyzing and testing a product, laboratories also use many dangerous chemicals in the analysis and testing process.
Risks can arise in the laboratory, keep in mind that all chemicals are not completely safe. Almost all chemicals can have dangerous effects if touched for a long time. Laboratory workers and visiting guests must be careful and pay attention to chemical symbols for work safety. There are several chemical symbols to indicate whether a chemical substance is reactive, explosive, and so on.

Therefore, it is important for all personnel in the Laboratory to implement appropriate OHS procedures so that the risks above can be avoided. Here are some OHS procedures in the laboratory that you need to know:
- Laboratory Clothing, everyone who carries out activities in the laboratory must wear a coat that complies with work safety regulations in the laboratory and is accompanied by gloves and other comfortable protective equipment.
- Transferring Chemicals, when moving certain substances, officers must read the label on the container and make sure they do not take the wrong substance and do not return a chemical to the original container or bottle. This is done to avoid possible contamination.
- Laboratory Equipment and How it Works, officers must use laboratory equipment carefully and thoroughly, hold the label in the palm of their hand when holding the reagent bottle and avoid glass shards from tools and materials made of glass.
- Waste Disposal Rules, remaining chemicals must be handled using appropriate procedures and must not be thrown directly into the environment.
- Mitigate the risk of being exposed to chemicals. If chemicals come into contact with your skin, don't scratch or rub your hands, dry it first and then apply Levertran ointment which can treat burns. But if the condition is serious enough, immediately take it to a medical room or hospital for more appropriate treatment.
The Laboratory of PT Biometrik Riset Indonesia has implemented the things listed above, thereby avoiding the risk of accidents and other types of danger.
